Shouldn't we at least be weird?

I've finally gotten around to reading The Life You've Always Wanted by John Ortberg. I'm only 39 pages in, and already I feel like I've heard this all somewhere before. That said, it really is a good book for motivating some serious reflection. In talking about being spiritually inauthentic, Ortberg quotes someone who asks about his church, "'Well, you use drama, and people are used to that in the world. And you play contemporary music just like they're used to hearing. So how will they know you're different? Everybody knows that as Christians we're supposed to be different from people in the world by being more loving and more gentle, and everybody knows that we're not. So don't we have to do something to show we're different?" Ortberg then writes, "In other words, if we can't be holy, shouldn't we at least be weird?"

Luckily, I go to a church where I feel like if we're weird it's because we really are, not because we're compensating for a lack of spiritual growth. In general, I feel my group of friends is pretty authentic. Just last weekend I was riding roller coasters at King's Island with a friend. We rode as many rides as possible in the front seat, and as we were dangling over the first hill on one ride waiting for the rest of the cars to catch up with us and begin the terrifying decent, he said, "oh shit!" That's exactly what I was thinking, and at that moment there was no point in putting any spiritual spin on what was an honest - and frankly appropriate - thought.

I've never read anything by Ortberg, though anyone who can quote both Kierkegaard and Garrison Keilor in the first two pages of a book will catch my attention. So maybe I'll ask to borrow that book when you finish it.

Though I have a feeling from the quote you gave, I may not be the target audience for that book. The things that are capable of reaching me spiritually are unfamiliar to the other Christians I know. I am a very untrendy Christian. Sometimes this is a good thing, but sometimes it just makes me a snob, so I'm not sure how much I should allow my untrendiness to be validated as Spiritually Authentic ©.

That said, I'd be interested in seeing what else this guy says.

I am weird too... AND a loser. :O)

Jennifer... John Ortberg is my hero. He and Dallas Willard are the two biggest influences in my theology and preaching (and yes, I have stolen more illustrations from Ortberg than I care to admit!).

John describes himself as "Dallas for Dummies" so John reads a lot of Dallas...in fact was a student of his... they are very similar.

"The Life..." is one of the best books I have ever read... so even if you are "untrendy," I would read it and reflect on it.

I can't believe I just confessed I steal a lot of Ortberg Illustrations. Oh shit.

Paul: I was aware that Ortberg and Willard have greatly influenced your sermons. I think I'd like to give Ortberg a try, because I liked the first few pages that amazon will let you read online.

Thanks for the offer of lending me a copy of the book--just be aware that it may take me a good while to finish it. With trying to finish my degree, my leisure reading time is very scarce.

Lunch still sounds like a good idea :)
