Helping our Neighbor

I've become friends with a family that I met in a homeless shelter in Atlanta last summer. They recently moved to Columbus, Ohio, and they just moved into their new apartment yesterday. She's a single mom with an 11-year-old girl and an 8-year-old boy. The mom is starting a job training program, but their resources are very limited right now. They are in need of everything that one might need to live independently in an apartment including the following:

plates, bowls, silverware, drinking glasses, pots, pans, knives, beds (3), pillows, sheets, blankets, towels, can opener, kitchen utensils, lamps, couch, chairs, dining room table and chairs, alarm clocks (3), broom/dust pan, mop, kitchen trash can, dressers, hangers, TV, iron/ironing board, and shower curtains (2).

Basically, if you need it to sleep, eat or sit, they need it. They are moving in with just a few suitcases of belongings. The kids are also in need of the following for school:

bookbags, paper, pencils, pencil sharpeners, notebook paper, art supply box (for pencils and such), ink pens, hand sanitizer and travel tissues.

Please consider donating any of these items in new or gently used condition. I will be taking a trip up, leaving from Athens on Feb 17, but I'll need to load on Thursday night. Space may be limited on this first trip, but I plan to take a trailer up on Feb 25th if I have large items like furniture. If I get beds by the 17th, I'll see if I can get a trailer right away. Please reply to this post if you can help. You can email helpout@vorkavich.com to arrange for pickup and delivery of your donation. Arrangements will also be made for donations received from the Columbus area.

Wow, the response has been tremendous! So far there are people contributing from Cleveland, Columbus and Athens. We now have lots of misc. kitchen utensils and dishes, a futon, microwave, toaster oven, toaster and a few school supplies. I'm dropping off what I have so far on Friday night. The rest will go up with me next Saturday the 25th. I'm renting a 5x8 foot trailer and I'm hoping to see it filled.

They still need some beds (2 twin, 1 full+), other misc furniture, and most everything else on the list. It turns out they could also use some food to eat on all those new dishes. They will be getting assistance with food soon, but for now they're on their own and their cupboards are very bare. If you'd like to help out in that way, just let me know.

Thank you so much for giving generously. Keep it coming! I'll also be able to pick up large items in Columbus on the 25th.

Things are still slowing rolling in, but we still have a little left to go. They still need:

Alarm clocks (3)
pillows
sheets (twin and full)
twin bed frames and box springs (2)
blankets
lamps
end tables/night stands
dressers
ironing board
shower curtains (2)
backpacks for school (2)
school supplies
groceries

I'm leaving Athens at 9am on Saturday morning with a trailer for large items. Please contact me on Friday if you have something to donate.

One more thing...

They could really use a freestanding kitchen counter / shelving thing. If you have one, you'll know what I mean.

God is good. All the time! It's the night before I drive up to Columbus and I have enough stuff to pack my 5x8 foot trailer! From yesterdays list, we have received alarm clocks, pillows, sheets, beds (3), end table, ironing board, school supplies, backpacks and some money for groceries! Twenty-two people have donated items, money or time to make this happen. You are amazing and this family feels so loved.

Two of the beds were provided by Good Works in exchange for volunteer hours to be worked on March 11th. I'll be working along with the family to help others here in Southeast Ohio. Please contact me if you would like to join our work group. Your volunteer hours beyond those needed for the beds can provide additional items to the family including food, bicycles and other household items. It's also a great opportunity to meet the family and build relationships with each other.

Thanks again for giving generously and sharing the love of Jesus with this family.
