Reminders

I've been reading Too Small to Ignore: Why Children are the Next Big Thing by Dr. Wess Stafford of Compassion International. Toward the end, Wess explains that he suffers from tinnitus (ringing in the ear), and he uses that to remind him of his mission - his purpose and calling from God. Every time he becomes aware of the ringing (frequently), he looks around for a nearby child to encourage. If none are nearby, he says a prayer instead. We are a people who need reminders of our purpose and our place. Some of my reminders include a picture of Carlos, a little boy I sponsor in Honduras; scriptures written on note cards in my car; quotes on my bulletin board; and things that remind me of specfic people or places that have impacted my life - like the bright moon on a starry night that reminds me of a dear friend, or the little "chiba" bus that reminds me of my time in Ecuador. Interestingly, I often find that God brings those very reminders to me at times when I need them. The moon may break through the clouds when I'm sad, or I may see "my" scripture written by someone else in an unexpected place. What are your reminders?

How true that is! Many of my reminders are found in books. Stories by some of my favorite authors come back to me again and again, reminding me of who I am and who I am meant to be. They show me that there is a pattern and help me to pick out pieces of it.

Other non-literary reminders include the sky under any conditions (It always uplifts me or fills me with awe), and my cats, who remind me of what love and unconditional acceptance feel like.

Thanks for the reminder, Jared. I too had a quote board at one time, but took it down for reasons I've forgotten. All of those quotes spoke very powerfully to me, and I need to put them in a prominent place again.

I will never see the number 38 in quite the same way again. It is the new 13. I would join your singalong, but I dont't know the words. And please, don't offer to teach me!
